Your safety

Safety is one of OPG's core values. OPG believes that healthy employees working safely in an injury-free and healthy workplace is good business, and feels that our business performance and safety performance are tied together. In order to attain our vision, we have developed three objectives:

  • Achieve Canadian Electricity Association's "Top Quartile" performance, which is a benchmark that includes data from 17 Group I and II members, with greater than 500 employees
  • Adopt Continuous Improvement initiatives in our performance measures and safety management system
  • Reach Zero Injuries status

Our ultimate goal of "ZERO INJURIES" applies to our employees, the public and our contractors, and we feel we are a leader in North America in this regard. We pride ourselves on a strong safety culture where employees are encouraged to use conservative decision-making and a questioning attitude when it comes to safety
risks in the workplace. Our safety culture is further strengthened through partnerships with our unions, who share a mutual goal for an injury-free and healthy workplace. We are also a leader in Young Worker Safety, and a proud supporter of PassPort to Safety,
a program aimed at young workers aged 15 to 24 years of age, that provides them
with a challenging and educational Internet-based quiz aimed at improving general
safety awareness.

Your wellness

Our state-of-the-art Employee Wellness programs provide a variety of wellness initiatives focused on health awareness and education, health services and support for return to work from illness or injury. Our on-site health clinics are staffed by a team of Occupational Health Nurses and Physicians, offering programs such as our award-winning Disability Management Program, first aid, assessments, and counselling and advice on a variety of health topics. Employee Wellness offers lunch and learn sessions, an Employee and Family Assistance Program, on-site flu immunization clinics, specialized workplace health programs and other healthy initiatives. It's all here at OPG. We also offer on-site fitness facilities at our Head Office location as well as at some of our generating stations.

Work/Life Balance

OPG recognizes the multiple responsibilities of its employees. Through a variety of policies and programs, our employees are able to effectively integrate the many dimensions of their lives - at work, at home and in the community. From policies covering flexible work arrangements to education sessions on parenting, and services provided through our Employee and Family Assistance Program (e.g. elder care and childcare referrals), OPG offers a wide spectrum of guidance and support for employees of all ages and at all stages.

High-quality childcare is available in two on-site childcare centres in Toronto. Hydrokids, OPG's flagship centre, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2005.

We want our employees and their families to enjoy their recreational time together while saving money. In supporting our employees' work/life balance, we partner with companies to offer employees corporate group discounts (home and car insurance, fitness memberships), employee purchase plans (auto cellular purchases) and an exclusive event ticketing service (theatre, sporting events, movie tickets). In addition to corporate events, we have a variety of sports and social clubs across OPG, coordinating many social and recreational activities within their local OPG communities.

Volunteerism

OPG prides itself on being a good corporate citizen. Part of our commitment is demonstrated through the energy and enthusiasm of our employees. Not only do our employees organize and contribute generously to OPG's annual Charity Campaign, they are active participants in a wide range of community-based organizations, projects and activities. Whether they are representing OPG or involved in an initiative of their own choosing, OPG employees dedicate countless hours of volunteer time annually.
