Here at OPG, we embrace diversity in its broadest sense - a mix of talents, perspectives, backgrounds and experiences that increase our collective capability. Diversity is an integral part of our business practice, and we value and are committed to an equitable workplace where everyone can realize their full potential with equal access to opportunities. Diversity at OPG means:
- treating all employees with dignity and respect
- valuing diverse perspectives and approaches, including those brought by race, gender, religion, family status, culture, age, physical abilities, sexual orientation, education, place of origin and communication styles
- ensuring that structures exist for employees and unions to share and discuss diverse views
- recognizing that OPG will gain a competitive advantage by engaging ALL employees to their full potential
Below are a few examples of our initiatives that highlight our commitment to diversity:
- Corporate and site Diversity committees made up of union, non-represented and management members are actively involved in creating equitable and healthy workplace environments.
- Special events and campaigns have become part of our culture - i.e. Charity Campaign, White Ribbon Campaign, international food festival, clothing drive for disadvantaged people seeking employment, hockey equipment collection for aboriginal youth, etc.
- A Diversity calendar is produced annually, highlighting a wide range of special dates of religious or community significance.
- We sponsor various student awards and scholarships, including the John Wesley Beaver award for aboriginal students.
- Support is provided for several youth programs like Ryerson University's Discover Engineering Summer Camp for young women considering careers in non-traditional fields (trades, science and engineering).
- We sponsor community awards and programs, including the annual Courage to Come Back Award for individuals who have overcome major physical or mental obstacles in their lives.
- We collaborate with non-profit agencies providing employment and counselling services to members of the Employment Equity designated groups.
- OPG Employees are involved in mentoring programs for foreign-trained workers.
- Ongoing support for two on-site childcare facilities is offered.
- Employee networks exist for sharing information, experiences and ideas (online networks exist for employees with disabilities and for families supporting children with special needs)
