  Career Paths Working at OPG

Are you graduating in 2006/2007? Or are you a recent university graduate from an Engineering or Applied Science program looking to put your energy to good use? Then how about considering a graduate opportunity within the Nuclear Business Unit at Ontario Power Generation. For information on career paths in our Fossil, Hydroelectric, and Corporate business units, please visit this section of our site regularly as additional information will be posted as our other business units' needs arise. The Graduate Training Program

Our training and development program for newly graduated engineers lasts 18 months and consists of rotations that are designed to engage graduate trainees in relevant training and work experiences. New grads who complete the program develop into highly competent professionals, with a broad understanding of the nuclear power business. Rotations take place at our two generating stations, Pickering and Darlington, and give the graduate first-hand knowledge of the production issues facing the business.

Engineering Divisions

Our Engineers provide specialized expertise and guidance in support of the operations, maintenance and modification of Pickering A, Pickering B and Darlington, in a variety of divisions, including:

STATION ENGINEERING

With a division located at each site, this unit provides day-to-day support to plant operations and is comprised of three departments: Performance Engineering, Components and Equipment Engineering, and Reactor Safety.

Performance Engineering takes the system view of the plant and works to improve system and station performance, based on an integrated understanding of hardware and related program performance. This includes configuration management, operations, maintenance, procurement, engineering, training, materials management and license considerations.

Components and Equipment Engineering involves taking the hardware view of the station and defining preventative and predictive maintenance, testing and surveillance requirements, as well as performing inspections for major components in accordance with standards and programs.

Reactor Safety provides services and advice in support of the day-to-day operation of the reactors within the safe operating envelope. This support includes fuelling, reactivity management, heat sink management, risk assessment, testing and performance engineering for shutdown and control systems.

ENGINEERING AND MODIFICATIONS

This central organization maintains the design basis of the stations, executes projects to modify the plants, carries out engineering programs on behalf of all sites, and manages design and installation contractors. Located at each of the three nuclear plants operated by OPG, as well as in corporate offices in Durham Region, staff members work in these major divisions: Plant Design, Engineering Services and Projects and Modifications.

Plant Design maintains the design authority for each station and ensures systems are in compliance with standards, codes and license conditions.

Engineering Services provides the conceptual and detailed designs for plant modifications, and maintains responsibility for key programs across all stations, including welding, chemistry, steam generator performance, procurement engineering, digital control computer health and engineering analysis.

Projects and Modifications manages the majority of the projects in the Nuclear project portfolio, as well as most of the design and installation contracts that support the project work program.
