Mechanical Maintainer

"What do I need?"

To be considered for an experienced Mechanical Maintainer position,
you will need one of the following:

  • A Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent), plus completion of a minimum 2 year recognized community college program in Industrial Mechanic Millwright, plus a minimum of 3 years experience in a related field.

  • A Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent), plus completion of a Certificate of Qualification in Industrial Mechanic Millwright, Tool & Die Maker, Machinist, Steamfitter, Welder, Mould Maker, or Boiler Maker.

    * Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.



    To be considered for an Apprenticeship/Trainee position, you will need one of the following:

  • A Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent), plus completion of a minimum 2 year recognized community college program in Industrial Mechanic Millwright, plus experience in a related field preferred.

"How do I apply?"

Visit our virtual career centre at www.mypowercareer.com and submit a career profile. Our automated system will then e-mail you a notification when the Mechanical Maintainer position is posted, inviting you to apply online. If you meet selected criteria, you may be invited to write a series of tests that will analyze your diagnosis, problem-solving, English, safety consciousness and technical comprehension skills. Should you wish to practice some ability tests, please visit the SHL website. If you successfully pass these tests, you may be invited to attend an interview to determine your eligibility for the job. If you make the shortlist, you must undergo security/medical checks and supply references.

"I've been hired! Now what?"

You will be given all the tools and equipment required for the job, and OPG provides all new employees with extensive training. You will be required to complete general and trade-specific training before becoming qualified as a Mechanical Maintainer. General training can last up to one month, and consists of science fundamentals and safety awareness to qualify workers to understand basic nuclear facility systems and station operations. Trade-specific training consists of two blocks. The first is a combination of in-class and on-the-job training, as well as crew assignments. The second block includes field training and focuses on advanced skills in various tasks. During the second training block, you will be given a series of small tasks to complete that will test your hands-on knowledge and skills. Trade-specific training can take up to four years.

"What will my day be like?"

A typical day as a Mechanical Maintainer involves a variety of tasks that can be somewhat repetitious, but extremely rewarding. The majority of your work will entail inspection and preventative/predictive maintenance that will ensure any mechanical problems can be prevented or addressed at an early stage. You'll also have to troubleshoot and carry out actual repairs in order to maintain a safe working atmosphere and reinforce OPG's commitment to the safety and well-being of its employees. The physical elements of the job can be fairly intense and as with any job, there's paperwork! Work reports must be accurately maintained and filed in order to ensure a safe, uninterrupted workflow. All aspects of a Mechanical Maintainer's job must follow specific OPG guidelines and practices at all times.

"Why wear plastic suits and respirators?"

At OPG, safety is our first priority. Protective equipment and clothing are provided and required at all times. Some of the equipment and clothing can be heavy or feel restrictive (i.e. plastic suits and respirators), but it minimizes chances of exposure to hazardous materials and radiation.

"What about my future?"

As a qualified Mechanical Maintainer, you could find yourself in another plant, sharing your knowledge with other team members, or even training new employees that are eager to learn from you.
