What is your definition of a progressive workplace? At Ontario Power Generation (OPG), we offer a competitive compensation package and comprehensive benefits coverage. We also provide our employees with a breadth of career opportunities to explore and a wide range of programs to help them achieve their personal and professional goals. These are just some of the reasons why OPG has earned a place as one of Canada's top employers.
Compensation And Benefits
Approximately 90 per cent of our staff is unionized. Why? Because unions ensure fair and equitable treatment for everyone. What is great about working at OPG is the fact that we have a good working relationship with the unions and we work well together. Each union offers its own unique compensation and benefits plans, so the package you receive may vary, depending on which union represents your role. There are two main unions that represent our employees:
- Power Workers' Union: represents Skilled Trades and Administrative workers
- Society of Energy Professionals: represents all Professionals and some Line Management staff
Growth And Development
At OPG, opportunities for growth and development are part of everything we do. We are committed to continuous learning, and want everyone that works here to broaden their horizons, expand their interests, and increase their capabilities.
We encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities to explore different career paths. We provide support to assist you in achieving your career goals through:
- job assignments or projects;
- mentoring relationships;
- training courses (job-related, technical in-house, optional soft skill);
- continuing education programs; and
- volunteer activities.
We strongly encourage and support full-time employees who wish to pursue continuing education for the purposes of career enrichment and development. Full-time employees may be eligible for tuition assistance, which is determined on a case-by-case basis.
Support For You And Your Family
At OPG, we recognize and respect the uniqueness and diversity of everyone that works here. That is why we have comprehensive benefits coverage and caring support services for you and your family:
- Employee and Family Assistance Program (EAP)
- Pregnancy and parental leave
- On-site child care (at some locations)
- Sick leave and long-term disability plans
Work/Life Balance
We recognize that balancing your personal and professional lives can be challenging, and through a variety of policies and programs, we will try to help you take care of things at work, at home, and in the community.
Most of our Professional and Office/Administrative staff work a 35-hour work week. Most Skilled Trades employees work for 40 hours each week. Sometimes, additional hours of work (overtime) may be required to meet peak work demands. When this occurs, employees are compensated for any pre-approved overtime at a rate that is consistent with the terms of their Collective Agreement.
OPG employees enjoy corporate/group discounts on fitness memberships, as well as auto and cellular phone purchases. They also have access to an exclusive event ticket service, for both theatre and movie tickets.
In addition, employees are encouraged to get involved and participate in the many social and recreational activities that are organized by our employee-run social clubs, both on- and off-site.
