Why OPG? - Looking Ahead

Due to the increased demand for clean electricity, as well as growth in the province, there are many New Generation Projects planned or already in the works at Ontario Power Generation (OPG).

We are committed to engaging our existing staff with exciting new projects across the province. Because existing OPG employees are given first priority in staffing our refurbishment and New Generation Projects, there are no major hiring phases planned as a result of new projects at this time, with the exception of the construction of the new Nuclear units at the Darlington Nuclear site. Hiring for Darlington New Nuclear has already begun for Engineering and Applied Science new graduates and experienced hires.

Hiring for Skilled Trades new grads and experienced hires is expected to begin in 2011.

Right now, there is a major hiring phase in progress for Nuclear Security at the Pickering and Darlington stations. Please make sure you have a profile on our career section to be alerted to these security and other exciting positions when they become available.

New Generation Projects

Ontario's energy expansion program has far-reaching effects across all generating areas of OPG and includes constructing new generating stations, refurbishing existing ones, as well as exploring new electricity resources.

Hydroelectric New Generation Projects

OPG's current Hydroelectric projects are assigned to existing staff, but new hiring does occur on an as-needed basis.

Niagara Tunnel Project

OPG is currently constructing a new tunnel to increase the yearly output of clean, renewable hydroelectricity from OPG's Sir Adam Beck Generating Stations by about 1.6 billion kilowatt hours – enough electricity for a city of 160,000. Strabag AG, an Austrian company, was chosen to design, construct and staff the project. If you are looking to work on this project, direct all inquiries to Strabag AG. Learn More

Hound Chute Project

OPG is proposing to redevelop the Hound Chute Generating Station located on the Lower Montreal River, east of the Town of Latchford, on the site of the existing generating station (the Proposed Undertaking).

Lac Seul Project

OPG is optimizing its use of existing water at Ear Falls Generating Station through the addition of a new 12.5 megawatt generating unit capable of generating approximately 52 million kilowatt hours of clean, reliable hydroelectricity per year. That is enough electricity to meet the yearly demands of five thousand homes. This project is now complete.

Lower Mattagami Project

This project would add about 450 megawatts of clean, renewable hydroelectric power to Ontario's electricity system. The project involves replacement of Smoky Falls Generating Station (G.S.) and the expansion of Little Long G.S., Harmon G.S. and Kipling G.S. on the Lower Mattagami River, north of Timmins.

Upper Mattagami Project

The redevelopment will be on the sites of the existing generating stations at Wawaitin, Sandy Falls, and Lower Sturgeon, near Timmins.

Thermal New Generation Projects

OPG is currently testing the use of biomass as a new renewable energy source for Ontario. All of OPG's Fossil-fuelled stations are either testing, or in the process of conversion to burn biomass rather than carbon fuels. At this time, there are no new hiring initiatives, but there are many exciting new opportunities as a result of the biomass initiatives for the large team of existing staff at every Fossil-fuelled station.

Biomass used in OPG's program consists primarily of wood pellets and agricultural by-products such as grain screenings and milling spoils that can be burned to generate electricity. OPG does not use food crops in its biomass program.

Biomass is considered to be 'carbon neutral', meaning the amount of carbon released when burned is equal to the amount removed from the atmosphere when the plant is growing. Learn More

Nuclear New Generation Projects

OPG's Darlington Nuclear site has been selected by the Government of Ontario as the location for Ontario's next nuclear generating facility. OPG is proud to have been selected as the operator of this new facility. It will be the first new nuclear station to be built in Ontario in more than 15 years.

The Environmental Assessment (EA) and licensing processes are well underway for this project.

OPG will need to grow staff levels to meet expanded operational needs. Hiring for Engineering and Applied Science new graduates and experienced hires has already begun; however, the project is currently primarily staffed by existing OPG employees. Hiring for the Skilled Trades should begin in 2011. Learn More
