POST-SECONDARY STUDENT AWARDS

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) offers a range of post-secondary student awards, to students attending accredited Community Colleges and Universities in Ontario. The student awards program is designed to encourage and help students obtain the education they need to build a rewarding career. The program highlights OPG's commitment to youth and education by offering financial assistance to students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

Student Award recipients are encouraged to apply to our advertised vacancies.

University Engineering Award

One annual student award, valued at $2,400 per Ontario University, is available to be granted to a member of an employment equity target group (women, indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit), disabled, visible minority)

Criteria

  • This award is granted to a student who has completed one year and is currently in the second year of an Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental or Nuclear Engineering Program
  • Requires strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Provide proof of good academic standing (minimum B average)
  • Involved in extra-curricular activities, including volunteer work
  • Will not be receiving more than one other award of equal or greater value in his/her second year
  • Have submitted a completed nominee information package, which must include a brief 250-500 word overview of your qualifications/interest in the OPG University Engineering Award, along with other required attachments detailed below under process
  • Is legally eligible to work in Canada upon graduation

* For Lakehead University the award recipient will be in the third year Technology program and continuing in the Engineering degree program.

Process

  • The award recipient is nominated through the University's internal awards selection process / program
  • Following nomination, the Awards Office provides written notification and a completed award nominee information package to Ontario Power Generation.  The Award applicant / nominee information package must include the following items: (1) a letter of nomination / recommendation from the the Student Awards Office, (2) a 250-500 word overview prepared by the nominee, highlighting their qualifications / interest in the OPG University Engineering Award, (3) a copy of the nominees most recet official transcript, (4) a copy of the nominees current resume, listing all work, volunteer and extra-curricular activities (full-time and part-time)
  • Following acceptance of the nominee, Ontario Power Generation provides the Student Awards Office with a letter of congratulations to the award recipient, along with the accompanying award cheque to be presented to the recipient at the University's Student Awards Ceremony

Community College Technician/Technology Award

One annual student award, valued at $1,000 per Ontario Community College, is availabe to be granted to a member of an employment equity target group (women, indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit), disables, visible minority). 

Criteria

  • This award would be granted to a student who has completed one year, and is currently in the second year of  an Electrical / Electronics / Instrumentation Technician or Technology Program or a Mechanical / Power Systems / Computer / Marine Engineering Technician or a Technology Program or a Chemical Technician or Technology Program
  • Requires strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Proof of good academic standing (minimum B average)
  • Involved in extra-curricular activities including volunteer work
  • Will not be receiving more than one other award of equal or greater value in his/her second year
  • Have submitted a completed nominee information package, which must include a brief 250-500 word overview of your qualifications /interest in the OPG Community College Technician / Technology Award, along with other required attachments detailed below under process
  • Is legally eligible to work in Canada upon graduation

  • The award recipient is nominated through the College's internal awards selection process/ program

Confederation College Negahneewin Incentive Award

Up to five annual student awards, valued at $1,000 each, are available to students of Indigenous Ancestry (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) at Confederation College.

Criteria

  • The award would be granted to a student of Indigenous Ancestry (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit) enrolled full-time in a General Vocational Program (GVP), Engineering Technology or related programs, Business Administration or related programs.
  • Requires strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Provide proof of good academic standing (minimum B average)
  • Involved in extra-curricular activities, including volunteer work
  • Will not be receiving more than one other award of equal or greater value in his/her second year
  • Have submitted a completed nominiee information package which must include a brief 250-500 word overview of your qualifications / interest in the OPG Negahneewin Incentive Award, along with other required attachments detailed below under process
  • Is legally eligible to work in Canada upon graduation

Process

  • The award recipient is nominated through the College's internal awards selection process / program.  The Selection Committee is comprised of two members from the Negahneewin College Board and the Chair of the Native Studies Department.
  • Following nomination, the Studnet Awards Office provides written notification and a completed award nominee information package (up to a maximum of 5 nominees annually) to Ontario Power Generation.  The Award applicants / nominee information packages must include the following items: (1) a letter of nomination / recommendation from the Student Awards Office, (2) a 250-500 word overview prepared by the nominee highlighting their qualifications / interest in the OPG Negahneewin Incentive Award, (3) a copy of nominees most recent official transcript, (4) a copy of nominees current resume (listing all work, volunteer and extra-curricular activities (full-time and part-time) 
  • Following acceptance of the nominee(s), Ontario Power Generation provides the Awards Office with a letter of congratulations to each award recipient along with the accompanying award cheque to be presented to the recipients at the College's Awards Ceremony

Lakehead University Indigenous Award

Up to five annual student awards, valued at $1,500 each, are available to be granted to student of Indigenous Ancestry (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) at Lakehead University.

Criteria

  • The award would be granted to a student of Indigenous Ancestry (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) entering or enrolled full-time in a Business Administration, Commerce, Engineering or Forestry Program
  • Requires strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Provide proof of good academic standing (minimum B average)
  • Involved in extra-curricular activities, including volunteer work
  • Will not be receiving more than one other award of equal or greater value in his/her second year
  • Have submitted a completed nominee information package which must include a brief 250-500 word overview of your qualifications / interest in the OPG Lakehead University Indigenous Award, along with other required attachments detailed below under process
  • Is legally eligible to work in Canada upon graduation

Process

  • The award recipient is nominated through the University's internal awards selection process / program
  • Following nomination, the Awards Office provides written notification and a completed award nominee information package (up to a maximum of 5 nominees annually) to Ontario Power Generation.  The Award applicants / nominees information package must include the following items: (1) a letter of nomination / recommendation from the Student Awards Office, (2) 1 250-500 word overview prepared by the nominee highlighting their qualifications / interest in the OPG  Lakehead University Indigenous Award, (3) a copy of nominees most recent official transcript, (4) a copy of nominees current resume (listing all work, volunteer and extra-curricular activities (full-time and part-time) 
  • Following acceptance of the nominee(s), Ontario Power Generation provides the Student Awards Office with a letter of congratulations to each award recipient along with the accompanying award cheque to be presented to the recipient(s) at the University's awards ceremoney.

John Wesley Beaver Memorial Award

Up to two awards are available annually to qualified students, one female and one male, of Indigenous Ancestry (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit).  The Award is valued at $3,000 for College recipients and $5,000 for University recipients.   

Criteria

  • To apply, students need to be either entering or attending an accredited college or university in Ontario
  • Be entering or enrolled in one of the following program areas: Engineering, Law, Environmental Studies, Business, Indigenous Studies, Communications, Human Resources, Technology, Trades or disciplines relevant to OPG’s business
  • Provide proof of good academic standing (minimum B average).   While an unofficial transcript can be submitted with your initial application, you will be required to submit an official transcript from your registrar’s office within 2 weeks upon notification you are an award winner.
  • Requires strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular activities, including volunteer work
  • Have submitted a completed application form, including a brief (500 words) overview of their interest in their community or their commitment to their culture and heritage and your interest in the John Wesley Beaver Memorial Award
  • Economic need will be a contributing factor given equal rating in the the other criteria
  • Preference will be given to non-funded students
  • Be legally eligible to work in Canada upon graduation

Note: To receive this Award, the applicant should not be receiving more than one other award of equal or greater value for the same academic year.  Students may apply for the Award more than once over the course of their academic career, but they can only win the Award once.

Process

  • Applications are made to Ontario Power Generation and must include requested attachments (e.g. proof of academic standing, overview of interest and commitment to First Nations, Métis or Inuit matters)

  • All applicants are required to submit the following items: (1) a completed signed and dated application form, (2) a copy of your most recent transcript, (3) a copy of your current resume, listing all work experiences, volunteer experiences and extra-curricular activities (full-time and part-time), both in school and in the community
  • All applications will be reviewed by Ontario Power Generation’s Native Circle selection committee, in collaboration with People and Culture (HR) and the Corporate Citizenship Program.  Short-listed applicants should be prepared to participate in a telephone interview.
  • Possible opportunities for student placements or future employment will be explored in follow-up discussions with Award winners.  All applicants are encouraged to complete a career interest profile on mypowercareer.com (to be considered for student placements, applicants must be returning to school or require a final work term to graduate).
  • The viability of this program depends on effective administration and on the maintenance of an arm's length relationship between the Native Circle selection committee and scholarship awardees.  In other words, the selection committee must ensure there is no relationship between themselves an the awardee.
  • Application deadline for the 2013 John Wesley Beaver Memorial Award is June 3, 2013
