How To Qualify For An Internship

To qualify for an OPG Internship position, you must:

• be attending school full-time;
• be returning to school full-time, or require the Internship work experience in order to graduate; and
• meet the eligibility requirements of your campus Internship Program.

Engineering students must be eligible for an Internship through their university, while Skilled Trades students must be eligible for an Internship or a year-long Co-op placement through their college.

Skilled Trades Internships

The following are Nuclear-specific positions. Our other business units (Hydroelectric and Thermal) also offer Internships on an as-needed basis.

Nuclear Operator: Hiring occurs in two groups throughout the year (Summer start and January start).

What we are looking for:

• college students from a Power Engineering Technician/Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technician, or combined Mechanical/Electrical Technician/Technology program;
• Interns who are returning to college on a full-time basis upon completion of their Internship work term to complete their academic program, or who require the Internship work experience in order to graduate; and
• applicants who have the flexibility to work shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Mechanical Technician: Hiring occurs in one group (12-month Co-op), starting in January.

What we are looking for:

• college students from an Industrial Mechanical Millwright Techniques/Technician, Mechanical Technician-Industrial Maintenance, or Mechanical Engineering Technology program;
• Interns who are returning to college on a full-time basis upon completion of their Internship work term to complete their academic program;
• individuals with exceptional problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills; and
• applicants who have the flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Electrical & Control Technician: Hiring occurs in one group (12-month Co-op), starting in January.

What we are looking for:

• completion of (at minimum) the first year of an Electrical Engineering Technician college program, or the second year of an Electrical Engineering Technology, or Instrumentation & Control Engineering Technology college program;
• Interns who are returning to college on a full-time basis upon completion of their Internship work term to complete their academic program;
• individuals with exceptional problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills; and
• applicants who have the flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.

All of the hours you have worked during your Internship at OPG will go towards achieving your Apprenticeship Certification, where applicable.

Engineering & Applied Science Internships

While our Nuclear business unit has developed and maintains a robust Engineering & Applied Science Internship Program, our Hydroelectric and Thermal business units offer Internships on an as-needed basis.

Recruiting Timeframes

Most Engineering and Applied Science Internships are posted through November and December and the work term begins in May.

Eligible candidates:

• must be registered in an Internship Program at their university;
• must have completed (as a minimum) their third year of study in a four- or five-year accredited Engineering or Applied Science program; and
• must return to university on a full-time basis upon completion of their Internship work term to complete the requirements of their academic program.

Note: Eligibility requirements may vary by university. In addition to the OPG requirements identified here, potential candidates must meet eligibility requirements as specified by their university.

The hours you work during your Internship at OPG may be credited towards achievement of your Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation.
