Students - Application process

General Application Process

Step 1

Create online profile

Creating a profile allows you to store your resume and cover letter and indicate your career preferences. It will also allow us to e-mail you about new vacancies in your field as they become available. It is the best way to be informed of job opportunities at OPG. Please note that, while completing a profile is an essential part of applying for a specific position, the profile itself is not considered an application. You must complete the full online application for each position that is of interest to you.

Step 2

Apply online

Apply to each vacancy that interests you. Fill out the pre-screening questionnaire and submit a resume and cover letter online. Note: Some aptitude testing for certain Skilled Trades positions may be required.

Step 3

Interview process

OPG will carefully review each applicant's qualifications and contact selected candidates for an interview. Successful candidates will be made a conditional job offer.

Step 4

Security check/medical clearance

A full security check and medical clearance will be conducted. Job offer conditions are removed only if you are cleared to work at an OPG facility.

Details For Summer Student Positions

During the summer, we hire students for a variety of positions, including administrative, clerical, and janitorial roles.

Summer student positions are not related to an academic field of study. Students wishing to find a position in their academic program should review our Co-op/Developmental and Internship opportunities.

Our Student Program is designed to build OPG's educational and community relationships. As such, a number of our Summer student positions are reserved to provide employment for financially disadvantaged students from local high schools with whom we partner.

Summer student opportunities are typically posted in February through March, and positions begin in May.

Check the Job Search section of our site and apply online for Summer student positions.

Typically, positions within our Nuclear and Corporate Functions groups are only advertised online. Due to the volume of applications received, some Summer student positions are filled based on a random draw of all eligible candidates.

However, positions at our Hydroelectric and Thermal  generating stations are often advertised within the local community and applications may be submitted directly to the hiring station. Inquiries may be directed to the Human Resources Department at the station where you are interested in working.

Our security clearance and medical checks apply to all Summer student positions.

Details For Co-op/Developmental Student Positions

Co-op and Developmental students are recruited through universities and colleges. They spend four months or more, learning first-hand from industry professionals while gaining valuable experience in their field of study.

Application Timeframes

The following application timelines apply to all Co-op and Developmental student positions:

  • Apply September through October for the January to April (Winter) work term.
  • Apply January through February for the May to August (Summer) work term.
  • Apply May through June for the September to December (Fall) work term.

Note: You must apply through the Job Search section of our site. Any application process that your school requires would be in addition to your OPG online application.

Skilled Trades

If you meet the selection criteria, you may be invited for testing. Should you successfully pass these tests, you may be invited to an interview.

Note: While these are not tests for which you can study, if you would like to become familiar with these types of aptitude tests, you should visit the SHL website.

Nuclear Co-op Positions (Mechanical Technical and Electrical & Control Technician) – students applying for Co-ops for Mechanical Technician and Electrical & Control Technician positions will not be interviewed. Decisions are made based on your application, testing results, your academic performance, and your instructor evaluations and attendance from your school.

Nuclear Operator Positions – short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview. No testing will be required.

Interviews for Co-op positions may be done on-site, or by video conferencing or over the telephone.

Our security clearance and medical checks apply to all Co-op/Developmental student positions.

Interns spend 12 months acquiring knowledge and hands-on experience directly related to their major field of study.

Application Timeframes

Engineering & Applied Science students – apply November through December for positions, which typically begin in May.

Skilled Trades students – postings occur throughout the year and work terms begin in the summer or January.

Resources & Tips

New to Canada?

Foreign-trained applicants should have their credentials assessed by a regulatory body, and indicate their equivalency information when applying online.

Preparing for Skilled Trades testing?

If you would like to practise for some of the aptitude tests required for our Skilled Trades positions, visit the SHL website.

Looking for a Second Career?

If you are interested in training or education for a new career, visit the Ontario government's Second Career website for information on how to apply for financial assistance.

  1. Cover letters give us a more personal insight into an individual, so remember that you're creating an important first impression through what you write!
  2. We read every cover letter, so use this opportunity to tell us why you are applying and how you think you fit into the role for which you are applying. Include a very brief overview of your qualifications, identifying your extra-curricular activities or past leadership activities.
  3. Ensure your cover letter is tailored to the specific job for which you are applying, as this gives us better information for making a decision, rather than having a generic cover letter.
  1. Resumes should highlight your key accomplishments and clearly communicate your academic and work achievements.
  2. Ensure you save your resume in simple text (.txt) format, and remove all formatting such as bold, bullets, and underlines, as these do not show up well on our system. In place of bullets, use asterisks (*). For a sample of a simple text resume, click here.
  3. You may use the resume builder to create a resume.
  4. There are many types of resumes and we don't have a preference for any particular style – just as long as you clearly indicate your experience through work or extra-curricular activities, as well as your education.
  1. Many interview notifications are sent via e-mail, so ensure that your e-mail address is accurate when submitting your application online.
  2. Prepare for interviews and ensure you do your research about the organization.
  3. While our business units may have different selection processes, they will most likely all include elements of behaviour-based interview techniques. This technique explores candidates' past experience as a predictor of future on-the-job success.

These experiences do not necessarily need to be in a work environment but they do need to be relevant to the question asked. Example: A stay-at-home mom has project management experience.
  4. You may want to visit a local job centre or a campus career centre for more information on behaviour-based interviews, to help you prepare appropriately.
