Position Overview

Radiation Protection Technicians work 8-, 10- or 12-hour shifts and must be prepared to be on duty any hour of the day.

Once you have been employed for a number of temporary contracts, you will be eligible to be recalled on a regular basis and will have the opportunity to apply for other positions within OPG. There are also full-time supervisory positions that need to be filled within the Radiation Safety Department, and Radiation Protection Technicians are encouraged to apply for these jobs.

As part of a team of safety professionals, you will observe work execution and worker practices, and provide coaching as required to ensure compliance with radiation protection procedures. You will provide radiation field support, including routine surveys, monitoring of contaminated tools and equipment, and routine monitoring of radiation instruments and protective equipment.

You will also review radiation hazards, carry out surveys, post hazard signage, apply barriers and ensure documentation is completed. In addition, you will observe work, assess conditions and provide control, guidance and information to workers to minimize radiation exposure and control contamination.

Safety Is A Priority

At OPG, safety is our first priority. Protective equipment and clothing are provided and must be worn as required for each discrete task. Depending on the unit, some of the equipment and clothing can be heavy or feel restrictive (i.e., plastic suits and respirators), but they are designed to ensure your safety by minimizing the risk of exposure to hazardous materials or radiation.
