Experienced Hires - Skilled Trades

Approximately 50 per cent of OPG's current workforce are in the Skilled Trades, and there are many other positions held by skilled tradespeople that span different facilities and work environments province-wide.

As a skilled tradesperson working for OPG, you will play a vital role in powering homes and businesses across Ontario 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will be a valued part of our team, making an important contribution to Ontario's electricity needs. OPG skilled tradespersons are represented by the Power Workers' Union and work in an environment that places the utmost importance on safety.

The following areas are just some of the key roles available at OPG, and the backgrounds typically required:

  • Nuclear Operator: Power Engineer, Marine Engineer, Civil Engineer
  • Thermal Operator: Power Engineer (minimum Fourth Class Operating Engineer: Third and Second Class are preferred)
  • Mechanical Technician: Construction & Industrial Millwright, Boiler Maker, Mould Maker, Machinist, Tool & Die Maker, Steamfitter, Welder, and Refrigeration Mechanic
  • Electrical & Control Technician: Construction & Industrial Electrician, Instrumentation and Control, Electronics
  • Inspection & Maintenance Technician: Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) Technician
  • Radiation Protection Technician: Grade 12 diploma and four months of industrial or trades work experience: Other relevant education that is preferred may include, but is not limited to:
      • Chemical, Environmental or Bio Technician               
      • Radiation Safety certificate or diploma programs; or
      • Health and/or Nuclear Sciences/Physics                    

Experience And Certification Requirements

 

The amount of experience required depends on the position. Mechanical Technician, Electrical & Control Technician, and Inspection & Maintenance Technician positions require a Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) or Certificate of Apprenticeship (C of A). Many of the positions also require completion of at least a two-year college program or equivalent. The specific job posting will indicate what experience is required.
